Finnair, Finlands national airline, dates back to 1923, although the name finnair was not used until 1953, with seaplanes being used intil Finlands first airport was built in 1936.
The Finnish goverment took a major stake in the airline in 1946 and flights to the rest of Europe were restarted after the restrictions of world War 2.
In 2011, it was announced that the Finnish domestic airline, Finnish Commuter Airlines, had been bought in a joint venture with Flybe (the latter having a 60% share).
Finnair now has a fleet of 79 aircraft, carrying 10.8 million passengers in 2016, a 4% increase from the previous year.
