Air France, the French national airline based at Paris, was founded in 1933 and developed routes across Europe and to French colonies in Africa, though during the second world war, based itself at Casablanca.

After the war, the airline was nationalised, then partially privatised in 1999.

2004 saw the merger of Air France and KLM of the Netherlands, resulting in the largest airline in Europe with a total 380 aircraft in October 2006. The two brands, Air France and KLM still operate separately however, with Air France also operating regional flights under the HOP brand name.

Air France carried 51.4 million passengers in 2018, a slight increase compared to the previous year.
