Austrian Airlines inaugural flight was from Vienna (the airlines base) to London in 1958, having been formed through the merger of Air Austria and Austrian Airways.
The name was shortened to Austrian in 2003
The airline also owns Austrian Arrows, a regional airline with flights into central europe, and Lauda Air, the airline founded by Niki Lauda of formula 1 fame, now a brand name for their charter flights.
In late 2008/early 2009, Lufthansa acquired a controlling share of Austrian Airlines.
The airline group carried 13.9 million passengers in 2018, a 7% increase from the previous year.
