airBaltic, the national airline of Latvia (with a secondary hub at Vilnius, Lithuania), was founded in 1995 with help from SAS Scandinavian, which owns 47%, the remainder owned by the Latvian state and is based at Riga.
In 2007 airBaltic became the first airline from the Baltic States to take online bookings via their web site (which has an English version), and carried just over 2 million passengers in that year.
In 2014, airBaltic became the worlds first airline to accept bitcoin payments for online booking.
The airline started with one Saab turboprop and now has a fleet of 30 modern aircraft.
4.1 million passengers were carried by Air Baltic in 2018, a 17% increase compared to the previous year.
