The Greek airline, Aegean Airlines was established in 1999, though its roots go back to 1987 when Aegean Aviation was established.
The first routes flown were within Greece using two new BAe AVRO RJ 100 jet planes, with two more similar planes added to the fleet in the following year.
The first Internatinal routes were flown in 2001 when the airline joined forces with Cronus Airlines.
In the following years, Aegean Airlines considerable increased its fleet and developed codeshare agrements with Lufthansa, TAP Portugal, and Brussels Airlines.
The airline joined the Star Alliance in mid 2009, becoming a full member the following year.
During 2010, an agreement was reached between Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air for the two airlines to merge. However the European Competition Commission stopped the merger going ahead, announcing their decision in January 2011. However, in October 2013, the European Commission allowed Aegean to acquire Olympic after lengthy deliberation.
Aegean Airlines carried 13.9 million passengers in 2018 (an increase of 5% from the previous year).
