Brussels Airlines was formed in 2006/2007 from the merger of Virgin Express and SN Brussels.
The former airline being part of the Richard Branson empire while the latter was founded by a group of Belgian investors after the bankruptcy of Sabena, the then national airline of Belgium.
In June 2009 it was announced that Lufthansa had been given the go-ahead to acquire a 45% share in Brussels Airlines, with an option to take control of the airline in 2011.
In 2017, Lufthansa took full ownership of the airline.
The airline joined Star Alliance in late 2009
Brussels Airlines transported 9.1 million passengers in 2017, an 18% increase from the previous year.
