Lufthansa, the largest German airline, based at Cologne was founded in 1926 and had fleet size of 162 aircraft that year.

After economic difficulties in the early 90s, the airline was reorganised and privatised, step by step.

The airline now has a fleet of around 285 aircraft and is the second largest airline in Europe, after Air France-KLM.

Lufthansa has a number of subsidiaries including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines (45% stake), and Germanwings. The KLM Group (including its subsidiaries) is the busiest airline group in Europe, having transported 104 million passengers in 2013.

BMI became a fully owned subsidiary of Lufthansa in 2009 but was sold to IAG (the parent owner of BA and Iberia) in 2011.

During 2015/2016 the brand Germanwings (a Lufthansa subsidiary) was dropped, with its place being taken by Eurowings, another subsidiary of Lufthansa.

In 2018, the Lufthansa and its subsidiaries carried 142 million passengers.
