Iberia, the largest airline in Spain, based at Madrid and Barcelona, started life in 1928 but came under state control in 1928 and merged into a larger company and ceased to exist in 1929.
After the Spanish Civil war (1936-39) the name Iberia reappeared.The company was nationalised in 1944 then privatised in 2001.
In January 2011, a merger between British Airways and Iberia Airways of Spain was finalised. It is expected that both airlines will continue under their own brand names.
IAG, the parent group of Iberia, transported 112 million passengers in 2018, a 7% increase from the previous year.
